Tests

Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) GRE requirements vary by field. Please see the Fields of Study online catalog for details on general, subject, and writing assessment test requirements. Scores alone do not determine admissibility; the university and the graduate fields make decisions based on a variety of criteria. Scores must be received by the Graduate School before the field's application deadline. To have scores sent to Cornell, you must indicate the Institutional Code for Cornell and the Department Code for your proposed field of study on the GRE. The codes are listed below.

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
The fields of Hotel Administration and Real Estate require GMAT rather than GRE scores. The fields of Management and Industrial and Labor Relations, and the Sloan Program in the Field of Policy Analysis and Management accept either test score. More information on the GMAT can be found at www.gmac.com/gmat.

TOEFL
Applicants whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL and have the official score reported to Cornell from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Only students who have studied full-time for two or more years at a college or university where English is the language of instruction located in a country where English is the native language are exempt from the TOEFL.

In September 2005, Educational Testing Service provided a new Internet-based Test (iBT) version of the TOEFL. This new version will test all four language skills important for effective communication: writing, listening, reading, and speaking. Each section has its own score, and the Graduate School has set the following minimum scores for admissions:

Writing: 20
Listening: 15
Reading: 20
Speaking: 22

The Graduate School will continue to accept scores for Computer Based (cBT) (213 minimum) and Paper Based (550 minimum) versions of the TOEFL that were taken within two years of the date the student submitted the application for admission. Please note that the cBT and Paper-based tests are being phased out by Educational Testing Service. ETS will send results directly to the Graduate School so long as the applicant indicates Cornell's institutional code on the exam. (Cornell's institutional code for all versions of the TOEFL is 2098).

To have scores sent to Cornell, you must indicate the Institutional Code for Cornell and the Department Code for your proposed field of study on the TOEFL. The codes are listed below. TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date because language proficiency can change considerably in a relatively short period of time. Scores more than two years old cannot be reported or verified by ETS, and are not forwarded to institutions for consideration. If you took the TOEFL test more than two years before the date you applied to Cornell, you will have to take the test again in order to have your scores reported.
