International Travel Registry

Summary

The International Travel Registry provides a one stop service to support emergency communications and access to emergency travel assistance while you are traveling internationally.

Who should use the travel registry?

  • Students: Mandatory for all undergraduate and graduate students on Cornell-related business. Students traveling to elevated-risk countries must also request approval from the International Travel Advisory Response Team (ITART).
  • Staff: Mandatory for all staff on Cornell-related business.
  • Faculty: Mandatory for all faculty on Cornell-related business.

What are the benefits of the registry?

  • Global emergency evacuation assistance, medical referrals, and travel-related assistance in emergency situations, including political or security situations are provided by International SOS.
  • Emergency communications between you, your family, and the university in the event of an emergency are facilitated through information about travel plans and contact information collected through the Travel Registry.

In Depth

Traveling abroad on Cornell-related business requires additional planning, preparation, and registration.

Your first step is to register with the International Travel Registry. Registration provides emergency services coverage by International SOS. Benefits include:

  • Medical assistance services, including facilitation of hospital payment and insurance information, 24-hour health information, and monitoring of treatment.
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation services, including emergency medical evacuation, dispatch of doctors/specialists, transportations after stabilization, and transportation to join a hospitalized participant.
  • Destination intelligence and support, including global security intelligence, evacuation support notification, and medical intelligence.
  • Security and political evacuation services, including transportation to departure point, and security/political evacuations.
  • Travel assistance services, including replacement of travel documents, emergency travel arrangements, language services, and an emergency transfer of funds.

After you have registered, follow the steps below.

Plan

  1. Visit the International Travel Health & Safety page for information on insurance, travel assistance, and for other important information.
  2. Consult the State Department for country-specific information, including from the U.S. Department of State, to determine risk-levels and concerns for each country.
  3. Check the ITART list of countries with elevated-risks. Students traveling to elevated-risk destinations require additional preparation and approval by the International Travel Advisory and Response Team (ITART). If you are a student traveling to an elevated-risk destination, apply for approval. Use the ITART application embedded within the registry form. Requests should be submitted three to four weeks before departure. 

Get Ready

  1. Review the risks associated with travel to your destination and determine if you need ITART approval.
  2. Print out the International SOS membership card.
  3. Schedule any needed immunizations well in advance. Consult the travel nurse at Cornell Health

Register

  1. U.S. citizens register via the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
  2. Inform your home country’s embassy when abroad.
  3. Review whether there are any Export Control Laws regarding your destination or email exportcontrols@cornell.edu for guidance prior to travel.
