Managing Relationships

You are here at Cornell, progressing with a new chapter of your life and having daily opportunities to meet new people.  We are sure that during your time at Cornell you will add many new friends to your social network and plenty of useful contacts to your career network.

New relationships in your life will inevitably form and evolve.  However, as important and exciting as it is to create new relationships, it is equally important to maintain and appreciate those personal relationships you already have - many of which are likely to have been the support that got you to where you are today.

Relationships with partners and family are the source of greatest support for many graduate students.  Although, sadly, at times these very same relationships can also be the cause of great emotional stress too.   It is very important to consider how to maintain the healthiest and happiest personal relationships because these will continue to be the foundation on which you will continue to build on your successes in life.

The following are two articles we recommend from the University of Toronto’s Health and Wellness Program, giving advice on Dealing with Relationships as a Graduate Studentand Balancing Family and Graduate Studies.

If you or someone you know is feeling stressed due to a personal relationship, Cornell’s Gannett Health Services provides a list of considerations regarding how to deal with Relationship Stress.

We hope that reading these articles helps you maintain loving, supportive and caring relationships with those closest to you during your graduate student life and beyond.
