Research Degrees
The Graduate School offers research degrees and professional degrees in nearly 100 fields of study with opportunities for further exploration in 18 minor (non-degree granting) fields.
Research degrees:
- MS (Master of Science)
- MA (Master of Arts)
- MS/PhD (joint Master’s/Doctor of Philosophy)
- PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)
- JSD (Doctor of Science of Law)
- MArch II (research-oriented Master of Architecture)
- Two-year MLA (Master of Landscape Architecture)
Degree Requirements
The Graduate School’s degree requirements are kept to a minimum in order to give the Special Committee and the student freedom to determine appropriate degree requirements and to define a program of study best suited to the student’s particular goals.
For the Ph.D., M.A., and M.S. degree programs there are three requirements imposed by the Graduate School:
- registration units,
- examinations, and the
- dissertation or thesis.
The graduate fields may set additional requriements. Please check with your field for more specific field-related information.
Except in certain professional degree programs, requirements for credits or courses are not imposed by the Graduate School.
