Policy Analysis and Management

Field Description

The Ph.D. program combines a focus on the substantive policy areas of health, consumer, and family/social welfare with graduate-level training in a theoretical or disciplinary area, analytical or empirical methods, and multiple disciplinary approaches. The Ph.D. degree is designed to prepare students for faculty positions in public policy, public health, and other academic positions. It also equips students with research and evaluation skills useful for careers in private consulting, government, or the non-profit sector.

Doctoral program.
The multi-disciplinary faculty in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management (PAM) work with graduate students in the inter-disciplinary PAM Ph.D. program, and with graduate students in the Ph.D. programs in Economics, Sociology, Human Development, and other graduate fields. The PAM Ph.D. program combines a focus on the substantive areas of education policy, family/social welfare policy, health policy, and regulatory policy, with graduate level training in a social science discipline, empirical research methods, and an understanding of how multiple social science disciplines approach public policy research.

Professional master's degree program.
The Master of Health Administration program (Sloan Program) is a prescribed two-year program designed to prepare individuals for administrative careers in health care settings such as hospitals, management consulting firms, private industry, government agencies, health care delivery systems, long-term care, and mental health and social welfare agencies. Students complete requirements in health services administration and selected electives in functional areas such as finance, marketing, information systems, and human resource management.

M.H.A./M.B.A. dual degree program
The Master in Health Administration/Master in Business Administration program is offered in conjunction with the Sloan Program in Health Administration and the Johnson Graduate School of Management. This dual degree provides students interested in health management and desiring in-depth training in the general field of business administration an opportunity to pursue both an M.H.A. and an M.B.A. simultaneously.
