Can the construction crew ensure that the Tower Road bike lane is free of debris?

Date: September 2022

Question

Hi Deans,

There has been a lot of construction debris coming off the new building site on Tower Road near the Ag Quad (gravel, mud, etc.) and it is all collecting in the bike lane on Tower Road making the lane unsafe for bicyclists. I have already skidded out on the gravel a couple of times this year. Would it be possible to get the construction crew to ensure that the bike line is free of debris at the end of their workday?

Kindly,

Concerned about Bike Safety

Response

Dear Concerned about Bike Safety,

Thank you so much for your question. I reached out to Leslie Schill, as she is the director of campus planning, to share your question (and concern) with her.  As safety is always a top-level concern at Cornell, she was pleased that you have come forward with what is a reasonable request.  As a result, she was able to work with the manager for the Atkinson Center development project and the director of grounds to be able to have this cleaned up today. More importantly, they worked with our contractors on the site to ensure regular cleaning and maintenance of the bike lane throughout the remainder of the project with the goal that this be safe for all bike riders.

In the future, if you would like to discuss the impact of construction directly with Leslie, she is more than happy to chat with you about this. Her email is leslie.schill@cornell.edu.

Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention.

Warmly,

Janna
