Why can’t I add a first year professor to my special committee?

Date: March 2017

Question

Hi,

I’ve been trying to add special committee members, but it looks like it is not possible to add many of the first year professors through Student Center. Why is this and how can I fix it?

Thanks,

Response

Dear Frustrated by Student Center,

Before a professor may serve on a student’s special committee she or he must be nominated to one or more graduate fields, and be approved as a member of the graduate faculty. It appears that the professor you are trying to add recently arrived at Cornell, and is not yet a member of the graduate faculty. Once this professor is nominated and approved you’ll be able to add her to your committee. If her nomination is currently in progress and you need a short extension on the deadline to form your committee please contact the graduate student service office in 143 Caldwell and they will be happy to assist.

Sincerely,

Jason
