Why is one of the buildings on campus locked early?

Question

Dear Deans:

I am confused why the back door of “building K” would be locked at 3:52 pm on a Friday, but “building T’s” back door by the elevator is open. Similarly why do the front doors of K/B lock earlier than T. It is definitely not a security issue because everywhere is accessible if you walk to the front door of T. While you may answer, “just walk around the building every time” the cut off between K and U makes this terribly unpleasant in weather conditions such as blizzards, sleet, rain etc. Is this a heating/cooling issue? Another plausible reason hasn’t popped into my mind. Additionally, I fail to see why U/R/D have 24 access without requiring keycard but K/B/T is very limited.

Cheers,

Irked Graduate Student

Response

Dear Irked Graduate Student,

Thank you for your Ask a Dean Question.

I’m sorry you’ve been experiencing challenges with locked doors for academic buildings. The facilities director (Mr. B) for that area of campus recommends you contact Mr. S. (email address provided in original) to express your concerns. I’ve copied Mr. S here to facilitate the communication for you. Please follow up directly with him.

The facilities director did indicate that there were some anomalies this week in building access in this area due to the impromptu campus closures.

Mr. S may also have information regarding the differences across buildings in keycard or other access as in your question.

I hope this helps address your concerns.

Warm regards,

Barb
