DESCRIPTION:Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a competition for graduate students to develop and showcase their research communication skills. \nThe 2024 final round competition will be held on Wednesday\, March 20\, 2024 in G10 Biotechnology Building. We will also offer a virtual attendance option by Zoom for those outside of Ithaca. Attend and vote for your favorite presentation for the People’s Choice Award! \n3MT challenges research degree students to present a compelling story on their dissertation or thesis and its significance in just three minutes\, in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. In addition to the first place and second place winners from among the finalists\, audience members on March 20 will be asked to select a People’s Choice Award Winner.   \nRegister to attend.

SUMMARY:Graduate School Prep Lab
DESCRIPTION:The Cornell Graduate School Office of Access and Recruitment is hosting the Grad School Prep Lab program on Thursday\, March 7th (4:00 pm – 8:00 pm) for Cornell undergraduates interested in exploring graduate education. This non-discipline specific\, on-campus program is designed for Cornell juniors of any major. However\, this program is intended for students interested in learning more about research-based graduate degrees\, not professional degree programs (JD/Law\, MBA\, or DVM/Bet School).  \nThis program will provide an overview of graduate education and the admissions process as well as hold a workshop by Cornell Career Services on promoting yourself and succeeding as a PhD applicant. \nThis program has a particular focus on engaging those who are interested in and seek to help advancing aspects of diversity\, inclusion\, access\, and equity within higher education. Undergraduate students engaged in scholar programs focused on broadening access to undergraduate research and preparation for graduate studies are especially encouraged to register. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Kimberly Griffin\, Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Maryland\n \nDate: Friday\, February 29\nTime: 12:00pm – 1:30 pm (Grab & Go Box Lunch Available at 11:30am)\nLocation: Stocking Hall 148  \nRegistration Link: https://cornell.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1A3vBBwuPxoSmH4 \nSummary Session:\nWhile we know mentoring relationships are powerful interventions and a key strategy for promoting equity in the academy\, we also know that these relationships often fall short of fulfilling their potential\, particularly for early career colleagues with marginalized and minoritized identities. We will talk about what gets in our way of leveraging the power of mentorship to close equity gaps in the academy\, and I will offer a framework for thinking about identity in the context of our relationships. We will also talk about promising practices and strategies that can enhance our ability to form mentoring relationships grounded in equity\, affirmation\, and care. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Kimberly Griffin is Dean of the College of Education and a Professor in the Higher Education\, Student Affairs\, and International Education Policy Program (Student Affairs Area of Specialization). Dr. Griffin earned her doctoral degree in Higher Education and Organizational Change from UCLA\, her Master’s degree in Education Policy and Leadership at the University of Maryland\, and her Bachelors degree from Stanford University in Psychology.  \nPrior to completing her doctoral work\, Dr. Griffin worked in higher education administration\, primarily focusing in the areas of diversity recruitment\, admissions\, and retention in undergraduate and graduate education. Dr. Griffin’s research interests are primarily focused in three areas: diversity and equity in graduate education and the professoriate; diversity within the Black higher education community; and mentoring and career development. These interests have led her to conduct work on a variety of topics\, including: career development of Ph.D. completers in science\, Black professors and their engagement in student interaction\, the experiences of Black immigrant college students\, diversity recruitment in graduate education\, and campus racial climate. \nDr. Griffin is skilled in advanced quantitative and qualitative methods\, as well as the integration of these strategies in mixed methods research. Dr. Griffin is an active scholar and researcher\, engaged widely in efforts to promote diversity and equity in higher education. Her research has been funded by the Burroughs Welcome Fund\, National Institutes of Health\, and National Science Foundation. Her work has been published widely\, and has appeared in the Review of Higher Education\, Journal of College Student Development\, Journal of Diversity in Higher Education\, and Journal of Negro Education. Dr. Griffin’s work also contributes to national conversations on equity and inclusion\, and she has collaborated and consulted with the National Institutes of Health\, National Science Foundation\, National Academies\, American Council on Education\, and the Council of Graduate Schools to discuss extant research and new initiatives. She served as editor of the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education from 2018-2022. \nQuestions?
