SUMMARY:Building Mentorship Skills for Academic Careers
DESCRIPTION:Pre-registration is required. \nIn this series of interactive workshops designed for current Cornell graduate students and postdocs and open to those in all fields\, you will develop essential research mentoring skills\, particularly in disciplines where research is conducted collaboratively and in teams. Learn best practices for mentoring research students and technicians and develop planning and communication skills needed to guide individual mentees and research teams. \nAll sessions will be practical in nature and feature short pre-readings or videos\, case study discussions\, and activities to help identify your strengths and desired areas for improvement. Receive a certificate of completion for successfully participating in at least 4 of 5 sessions (dates: 1/27\, 2/3\, 2/10\, 3/3\, and 3/17). Scholars external to Cornell who are affiliated with specific programs are eligible to register as well. \nAdditionally\, we invite interested Cornell faculty and staff to register for the networking lunch and institute keynote talk by Dr. Wayne Scales on June 17. \nThere is no cost to attend; however\, this is a space-limited event. \n2025 Keynote\nTuesday\, June 17\, 2025\, 12:30 pm ET (Lunch from 12:00-12:30 pm)\n\nFostering Strategic University Partnerships for Excellence and Innovation\nDeveloping strategic collaborations and partnerships is a key element of any university faculty member’s success. These partnerships advance both research\, educational\, and professional development agendas. There is a relatively broad spectrum of organizations and strategic agendas to develop such partnerships\, but this discussion will consider one type of partnership that has received continued growing attention over the past decade. Although substantive partnerships between majority institutions and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been occurring at least since the 1970s\, in recent years due to the research trajectory of many of these institutions\, expanding opportunities exist presently. For example\, the National Academies of Science\, Engineering\, and Medicine (NASEM) has described these institutions as a relatively untapped national resource for talent. The importance and benefits of this type of partnership in higher education and recent examples of strategies used to create equitable and sustainable partnerships with HBCUs will be discussed. \nSpeaker\n \nDr. Wayne A. Scales (Cornell PhD ‘88)\, J. Byron Maupin Professor of Engineering\, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University\nProf. Wayne Scales received BS and MS degrees in Honors Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics from Virginia Tech and the PhD from Cornell University in Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics with focus in Space Plasma Physics. He was an ASEE Postdoctoral Fellow in the Space Plasma Physics Branch of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. Afterwards\, he joined the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech and is currently the J. Byron Maupin Professor of Engineering and was founding Director of the Center for Space Science and Engineering Research (Space@VT) and founding Co-Director of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Program in Remote Sensing. Prof. Scales is also an affiliate Professor in the Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering. He has served as Special Assistant to the Dean of Engineering and Senior Consultant to the Vice President of Research and Innovation working on special initiatives in Quantum Information Science\, Nanoscale Science\, and Postdoctoral Affairs. He currently serves as Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs where his responsibilities include supporting special initiatives involving faculty development as well as research and workforce development partnerships with MSIs and HBCUs. SUMMARY:Building Mentorship Skills for Academic Careers
DESCRIPTION:In this series of interactive workshops designed for current Cornell graduate students and postdocs and open to those in all fields\, you will develop essential research mentoring skills\, particularly in disciplines where research is conducted collaboratively and in teams. Learn best practices for mentoring research students and technicians and develop planning and communication skills needed to guide individual mentees and research teams. \nAll sessions will be practical in nature and feature short pre-readings or videos\, case study discussions\, and self-assessments to help identify your strengths and desired areas for improvement. Receive a certificate of completion for successfully participating in at least 4 of 5 sessions (dates: 1/28\, 2/11\, 2/25\, 3/11\, and 4/18). DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Kimberly Griffin\, Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Maryland\n \nDate: Friday\, February 29\nTime: 12:00pm – 1:30 pm (Grab & Go Box Lunch Available at 11:30am)\nLocation: Stocking Hall 148  \nRegistration Link: https://cornell.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1A3vBBwuPxoSmH4 \nSummary Session:\nWhile we know mentoring relationships are powerful interventions and a key strategy for promoting equity in the academy\, we also know that these relationships often fall short of fulfilling their potential\, particularly for early career colleagues with marginalized and minoritized identities. We will talk about what gets in our way of leveraging the power of mentorship to close equity gaps in the academy\, and I will offer a framework for thinking about identity in the context of our relationships. We will also talk about promising practices and strategies that can enhance our ability to form mentoring relationships grounded in equity\, affirmation\, and care. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Kimberly Griffin is Dean of the College of Education and a Professor in the Higher Education\, Student Affairs\, and International Education Policy Program (Student Affairs Area of Specialization). Dr. Griffin earned her doctoral degree in Higher Education and Organizational Change from UCLA\, her Master’s degree in Education Policy and Leadership at the University of Maryland\, and her Bachelors degree from Stanford University in Psychology.  \nPrior to completing her doctoral work\, Dr. Griffin worked in higher education administration\, primarily focusing in the areas of diversity recruitment\, admissions\, and retention in undergraduate and graduate education. Dr. Griffin’s research interests are primarily focused in three areas: diversity and equity in graduate education and the professoriate; diversity within the Black higher education community; and mentoring and career development. These interests have led her to conduct work on a variety of topics\, including: career development of Ph.D. completers in science\, Black professors and their engagement in student interaction\, the experiences of Black immigrant college students\, diversity recruitment in graduate education\, and campus racial climate. \nDr. Griffin is skilled in advanced quantitative and qualitative methods\, as well as the integration of these strategies in mixed methods research. Dr. Griffin is an active scholar and researcher\, engaged widely in efforts to promote diversity and equity in higher education. Her research has been funded by the Burroughs Welcome Fund\, National Institutes of Health\, and National Science Foundation. Her work has been published widely\, and has appeared in the Review of Higher Education\, Journal of College Student Development\, Journal of Diversity in Higher Education\, and Journal of Negro Education. Dr. Griffin’s work also contributes to national conversations on equity and inclusion\, and she has collaborated and consulted with the National Institutes of Health\, National Science Foundation\, National Academies\, American Council on Education\, and the Council of Graduate Schools to discuss extant research and new initiatives. She served as editor of the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education from 2018-2022. \nQuestions? (Graduate students and postdocs registering for the full institute will automatically receive registration to the keynote as well.) \n2023 Keynote\nTuesday\, June 6\, 2023\, 12:30 pm ET (Lunch from 12:00-12:30 pm)\n\nSuccessfully Navigating Academia: Structural and Agentic Lessons for Workloads\, Writing\, and the Workforce\nThere is no single solution for thriving in academia. In reality\, there is a constant interaction between forces under our control (i.e.\, agency) and forces outside of our control (i.e.\, structures) that impact and impede our ability to successfully navigate academic careers. In this workshop\, Dr. Damani White-Lewis will consider this duality within three essential elements of academic training: workloads\, writing\, and the workforce. Suitable for graduate students\, early career faculty\, and professional staff\, attendees will learn personal strategies and the necessary structural conditions that can be advocated for to improve their workload balance\, scholarly writing\, and hiring prospects. \nSpeaker\n \nDr. Damani White-Lewis\, Assistant Professor of Higher Education\, University of Pennsylvania\, Graduate School of Education\nDamani White-Lewis\, PhD\, is an assistant professor of higher education at the University of Pennsylvania. As an interdisciplinary scholar\, Dr. White-Lewis studies racial inequality in academic careers and contexts using multiple methods and theories from organizational behavior and social psychology. \nDr. White-Lewis’ work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) and has appeared in The Journal of Higher Education\, Research in Higher Education\, The Review of Higher Education\, American Educational Research Journal\, Teachers College Record\, and others. His dissertation received the 2020 Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Association of Chief Diversity Officers. He has also received honors and awards from the Association for the Study of Higher Education\, the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education\, and the American Educational Research Association. SUMMARY:Building Mentorship Skills for Academic Careers
DESCRIPTION:In this series of remotely delivered workshops designed for current graduate students and postdocs and open to those in all fields\, you will develop essential research mentoring skills\, particularly for disciplines where research is conducted collaboratively. Effective mentoring of student research is a key skill influencing everything from research productivity to personal satisfaction. Learn best practices for mentorship of summer undergraduate researchers\, rotation students\, or research technicians\, and develop planning and communication skills needed to lead a research project or group. \nAll sessions will be practical in nature and feature short pre-readings or videos\, case study discussions\, and self-assessments to help identify your strengths and desired areas for improvement.Receive a certificate for completing at least 4 of 5 sessions (dates: 3/23\, 4/13\, 4/20\, 4/25 (in person/hybrid event)\, and 5/11). Interested participants should apply prior to the start of the series with the expectation of attending all workshops and actively participating in small and large group discussions.  \nMost sessions are on Thursdays from 3:00-4:30 pm ET.
