SUMMARY:Ph.D. Hooding Photos Prior to Recognition Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Graduate School invites Ph.D. graduates and their advisors to the ILR Conference Center for the opportunity to have a professional photographer capture posed photos acting out the ceremonial hooding prior to the formal Ph.D. Recognition ceremony on May 23\, 2025. Photos will be shared with the graduates free of charge in the days following Commencement weekend. \nPhotographers and photo backdrops will be available between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in Room 229 at the ILR Conference Center\, next to Barton Hall. Photographers will capture posed photos of Ph.D. graduates and their advisors acting out the ceremonial hooding\, in which a faculty member places the hood over the shoulders of the graduate to signify their success in completing their graduate program. \nHundreds of Ph.D. candidates will be recognized at the event\, so please plan to arrive early to avoid a last-minute rush to take your photos. The photographers and backdrops will not be available following the formal Ph.D. Recognition Ceremony. \nGraduates are free to invite their advisors or another committee member to perform the hooding. In addition\, Dean of the Graduate School and Vice Provost for Graduate Education\, Kathryn Boor\, will be available from 4:30-5:30 p.m. to hood graduates whose advisors are unable to attend. Graduates should wear their appropriate cap\, gown\, and hood. Faculty members may wear their regalia\, but it is not required. \nGraduates and their advisors do not need to RSVP to take advantage of this opportunity. DESCRIPTION:In this series of interactive workshops designed for current Cornell graduate students and postdocs and open to those in all fields\, you will develop essential research mentoring skills\, particularly in disciplines where research is conducted collaboratively and in teams. Learn best practices for mentoring research students and technicians and develop planning and communication skills needed to guide individual mentees and research teams. \nAll sessions will be practical in nature and feature short pre-readings or videos\, case study discussions\, and self-assessments to help identify your strengths and desired areas for improvement. Receive a certificate of completion for successfully participating in at least 4 of 5 sessions (dates: 1/28\, 2/11\, 2/25\, 3/11\, and 4/18). DESCRIPTION:The Cornell Graduate School Office of Access and Recruitment is hosting the Grad School Prep Lab program on Thursday\, March 7th (4:00 pm – 8:00 pm) for Cornell undergraduates interested in exploring graduate education. This non-discipline specific\, on-campus program is designed for Cornell juniors of any major. However\, this program is intended for students interested in learning more about research-based graduate degrees\, not professional degree programs (JD/Law\, MBA\, or DVM/Bet School).  \nThis program will provide an overview of graduate education and the admissions process as well as hold a workshop by Cornell Career Services on promoting yourself and succeeding as a PhD applicant. \nThis program has a particular focus on engaging those who are interested in and seek to help advancing aspects of diversity\, inclusion\, access\, and equity within higher education. Undergraduate students engaged in scholar programs focused on broadening access to undergraduate research and preparation for graduate studies are especially encouraged to register. DESCRIPTION:NextGen Professors Power Mentoring Session with Dr. Corey Welch \nNextGen Professors is a career-development program focused on preparing Cornell graduate students and postdocs for faculty careers across institutional types. The primary audience for this program is doctoral students (in year three or beyond) and postdocs with a demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity\, inclusion\, access\, and equity in academia\, including but not limited to those from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the professoriate. Participants are members of a cohort who\, together\, engage in a series of professional and career development activities including monthly NextGen Professors meetings\, Power Mentoring Sessions with faculty\, and the Future Professors Institute.
