The dissertation trains academics to write for a very specific audience: a small committee of experts in the field. Journal article and monographs, too, are usually geared toward a highly specialized reader. But bringing your findings out into the wider world, where they can reach a broad, nonspecialist audience, calls for a different approach. How should you adapt your writing style as you turn your specialized research into a book, a magazine article, or an essay? What does it mean to write as a public intellectual, and how can you convey complex ideas without “dumbing down” your work?

In this webinar, participants will learn about:

• Authorial voice, tone, and register, and how to vary them to reach different audiences
• Using basic principles of plain language to make your writing more accessible, without losing meaning
• Integrating creativity, humor, and passion into your writing
• Crediting sources without burdening the text
• Avoiding common “academese” pitfalls, such as repetition and awkward transitions
