Welcome Fellowships

The Graduate School is pleased to provide a $750 fellowship to new, incoming doctoral (Ph.D. and D.M.A.) students to assist with start of the semester enrollment expenses. This award is intended to help support your studies, research, or to cover personal living expenses you may incur during your first semester of enrollment at Cornell.

How is the Welcome Fellowship Paid?

The full fellowship stipend will be deposited into your bank account as a lump sum in early August if you are enrolled in direct deposit or available for pickup a few days later if opting for a paper check. To sign up for direct deposit, visit the bursar website.

Tax Considerations

Fellowship stipends are generally considered taxable income, although taxes are not withheld for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Some international students are subject to tax withholdings under U.S. tax treaties. Students are strongly encouraged to set aside a portion of their stipend to pay their anticipated tax bill.  Additional information can be found on Cornell’s tax website for students.
