Turner Fellows to Advance Agricultural Development Research at Cornell
Eight graduate students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) arrived at Cornell in August as the inaugural cohort of Thomas Wyatt Turner Fellows, as participants in a one-year program designed to support next-generation leaders in inclusive and sustainable agricultural development.

When Gloire Rubambiza was installing a digital agriculture system at the Cornell Orchards and greenhouses, he encountered a variety of problems, including connectivity and compatibility issues, and equipment frozen under snow. Rubambiza, a doctoral student in the field of computer science, was able to solve these problems thanks to a university that gave him time, funding, and institutional support. But he wondered how farmers who lack these resources would tackle the same issues.

A social scientist who earned her doctorate in natural resources on the Hill, Meredith Gore, Ph.D. ’06–now an associate professor of geographical sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park–is one of the few researchers worldwide who focuses on wildlife crime.
