What study spaces exist solely for graduate students?

Date: December 2019

Question

Dear Deans,

I wish Cornell had a library, or multiple floors of an existing library, dedicated solely for graduate students. The need for focus is so necessary, and one cannot always achieve this in shared spaces with undergraduates. Can we do this? Aside from the Big Red Barn and the 5th floor in Olin, I’m not sure what else exists so would love to learn about other gems/places on campus.

Thank you,

Response

Dear Library-Seeking Grad,

Thanks for your tweet and having it submitted to Ask a Dean.

In addition to the graduate student spaces available in the Big Red Barn Graduate and Professional Center and in Olin Library as you note, there are some other options on campus that provide space for graduate students to have a bit of privacy for their scholarship. The Olin Graduate & Faculty Reading Suite on the 5th floor of the library is available to graduate students in any discipline, and is key-coded to limit use to graduate students and faculty.

Two other options are Mann Library Graduate Study Desks and Lockers on the third floor of Mann Library, reserved through the circulation desk, and Mann Library Graduate Study Rooms also on the third floor, available on a first-come, first-served basis through the circulation desk.

I hope you find these resources useful. Best wishes with your scholarship,

Barb
