Highlights from Announcements 4/26/21

August ’20, December ’20, and May ’21 Graduates

You are invited to attend the in-person Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 29th at 10:00 a.m. in Schoellkopf Stadium. All participants must follow health and safety precautions, and testing protocols will be required.

The deadline to order keepsake caps and gowns is May 5th. You must order a gown to attend.

Ph.D., J.S.D., D.M.A. Recognition Event 

In addition to the Saturday Commencement event, doctoral graduates are invited to attend a special University Ph.D. Recognition event on Friday, May 28th at 7:00 p.m. in Schoellkopf Stadium.

To attend you must:

  1. RSVP. Please RSVP as soon as possible but no later than May 10th to help with our planning and to know you are attending the event to read your name by completing the Qualtrics form linked to in Announcements.
  2. Order your cap and gown by May 5th. You must order a gown to attend.
  3. Check the Commencement website regularly for updates.

More information will be sent about health and safety precautions, and will be noted on the Commencement website. If you do not plan to participate, you do not need to notify the Commencement Office, and no further actions are needed.


Special Information for August ’21 Graduates

The Graduate School is pleased to announce that research degree students who anticipate completing their degrees for an August 2021 conferral are now invited to attend a May 2021 Commencement event if they are unable to participate in the December 2021 Commencement activities.

  • All Graduate School August ’21 graduates are invited to attend the Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 29th at 10:00 a.m. in Schoellkopf Stadium. 
  • All August ’21 Ph.D., D.M.A., J.S.D. graduates are invited to attend the University Ph.D. Recognition Ceremony on Friday, May 28th at 7:00 p.m.

If you are a research degree student with an anticipated degree conferral of August ’21, please complete the steps below.

  1. Add your name to the special sign-up list linked to in Announcements by May 1st. This form includes a sign up for Ph.D., J.S.D., D.M.A. students who would like participate in the Ph.D. ceremony.
  2. Order your cap and gown by May 5th. You must order a gown to attend.

Doctoral Candidate Places Second in NAGS 3MT Competition

Bhargav SanketiBhargav Sanketi, a doctoral candidate in biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, won second place in the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools (NAGS) Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition on Friday, April 23.

Sanketi was one of sixteen graduate students representing NAGS member institutions from across the northeastern United States and eastern Canada. He was selected as Cornell’s representative after winning Cornell’s 2021 3MT competition with his presentation, “To Be or ‘Knot’ to Be: Blueprint for a Small Intestine.”

As second place winner, Sanketi will represent NAGS as he advances to the Council of Graduate Schools’ North American 3MT showcase and competition in December in New Orleans.


From Cornell to NASA to an Icy Moon of Jupiter

Laura Jones-Wilson holding a globe and standing in front of a planeLaura Jones-Wilson, M.S. ’10, Ph.D. ’12, has long had her sights set on outer space.

“I learned about space at an Earth Day celebration when I was 5, and as soon as I found out that people had left the planet, I was like, ‘I’m in, let’s do this!’,” she remembers. “I got the word ‘aerospace engineer’ from watching ‘Star Trek’ episodes, and by early middle school, that’s what I was convinced I was going to be.”

Student Spotlight: Xin Wang

Xin WangXin Wang is a doctoral student in chemical engineering from Shanxi, China. After attending Zhejiang University as an undergraduate and beginning her graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she transferred to Cornell to continue research with her advisor and found new opportunities.
